Hotel Industry

Contact: Laura Dresser, COWS Research Director, ldresser at cows.org

In the past 30 years, hotel industry employment has nearly tripled – but poorly paid housekeeping and kitchen staff are under enormous pressure to “do more with less.” Our project, “Hotel Workers and Industry Change,” looks at the impact of industry restructuring on entry-level workers, and examines strategies – including union-initiated projects – that have lessened its negative effects. In addition to using quantitative data, COWS researchers have conducted more than 150 face-to-face interviews with hotel managers, union representatives, and employees.
