Service Sector

Contact: Laura Dresser, COWS Research Director, ldresser at cows.org

The rapid ascent of the service sector has given rise to a growing number of insecure, low-wage jobs; today, almost 30 million U.S. workers are earning poverty-level wages. Our research in this area – “More Servants or a Better Society?” – aims to fill knowledge gaps about the proliferation of service employment and the numerous challenges faced by workers in service jobs. Ultimately, COWS seeks to help frame a policy agenda that will move the service sector in a new direction – toward the “high road” of high wages, good benefits, and opportunities to move up.
