What Lies Ahead: Workforce of the Future
Second Annual Industry Partnerships Summit
October 12, 2004
Madison, Wisconsin
On October 12, 2004, about 150 private- and public-sector representatives
gathered in Madison to attend What Lies Ahead: Workforce of the Future,
the 2nd Annual Industry Partnerships Summit.
The meeting brought together participants in a major job-training initiative
funded by the U.S. Department of Labor and implemented by the Workforce
Development Board of South Central Wisconsin and Jobs With a Future (a
collaboration of employers and institutional partners, including Madison
Area Technical College and area Job Centers, that are working to improve
and align the region's workforce system). Funding for the two-year initiative,
known as Industry Partnerships, ends in October 2004.
The purpose of the Summit was to assess the effectiveness of the Industry
Partnerships project, and to map out future strategies for connecting
workers in South Central Wisconsin with quality jobs.
After being welcomed by Roberta Gassman, Secretary of the Wisconsin Department
of Workforce Development (DWD), Summit participants heard an overview
of current and future labor-market trends from Terry Ludeman, Chief of
DWD's Office of Economic Advisors. A panel of company executives then
shared their experiences with recruiting and retaining a diverse workforce,
and talked about the challenges they expect to face in meeting future
staffing needs. Two concurrent panels followed: one on the impact of new
technology on manufacturing firms, and another on redesigning health care
and developing a sustainable nursing workforce in Wisconsin. The Summit
concluded with a presentation on seniors in the labor force.
